This is Karen’s 2nd year coaching at Cary Gymnastics
She currently is our Recreational Gymnastics Director, coaches pre team, and performance team
At the age of 8, Karen’s mother saw a little girl "flipping" around the neighborhood and not being too familiar with the sport of gymnastics, decided to enroll her at the local YMCA. At that time, gymnastics was not by "Levels", but rather, by "Classes". By age 11, she was the Class III State Champion. Age 12, Class II State Champion. At 12 (based on the suggestion of her coach), she changed gyms and competed Level 10 (that was when gymnastics changed from "Classes" to "Levels"). Karen was fortunate to be a multiple year National Qualifier allowing her to travel within the US and train at Bela Karoyli's gym (for a summer camp). BUT, as much as she loved gymnastics (even as a child), she always preferred to coach or doing group performances (her greatest memory is doing a performance with Olympian Carl Lewis for Nike). Admittedly, she was not always the best "competitor"...her nerves usually got the better of her. And if truth is to be told, she probably only really liked competing because she got to make a lot of friends from other states (to whom she was pen pals with). By the time she was in high school, she was lucky enough to be on a gymnastics team that promoted team work, hard work and dedication, but still focusing on the fact that gymnastics was supposed to be FUN. Karen’s HS team, during her tenure, placed 3rd at State 3 of the 4 years that she was on the team and a State Qualifier each year (except for her Freshman year due to an illness). Her HS team was inducted in the IHSA Hall of Fame in 2010.
She has one daughter (that competed Level 8) who also did Varsity Cheerleading in high school. She is married to Richie and they have 2 rescue dogs: Banks and Lucy. In her spare time, she loves travelling, hanging out with Richie, as well as anything creative (hence, why she started my T-shirt business and does most of the spirit wear in the gym). Although she has a bachelor’s in criminal justice degree from Columbia College, gymnastics is her one of my strongest passions. Her coaching style is to teach strong fundamental gymnastics, while making sure the kids are having a blast. That's what gymnastics is all about!
